Messaging
ScentSell includes a built-in real-time messaging system for buyers and sellers to communicate directly — without sharing personal contact details.
How it works
Messages are private, one-to-one conversations between a buyer and seller attached to a specific listing or order. They are delivered in real time and stored in your ScentSell account.
Access your conversations from:
- The Messages icon in the header navigation (badge shows unread count)
- Any listing page → Message seller button
- Your Dashboard → any order → View messages
Moving a conversation into a swap
Tap Propose a swap in your conversation. Choose the bottle you want and what you will offer using the swap offer screen. An enquiry about a listing puts that bottle on its owner's side, whether the buyer or seller starts the proposal.
The proposal records both sides and your optional note. Its opening message links back to the original enquiry, and the enquiry links to the new swap.
In a swap conversation, choose Discuss this swap to attach your next messages to that deal. General conversation leaves them separate. Completed and ended swaps sit under Previous swaps; they do not become a new proposal.
If a message fails to save, your text stays in the box for retry. A partly saved proposal can be resumed from Propose a swap, including after closing or reloading the screen. Retry finishes the same proposal. Return to the original conversation or listing to resume its proposal. Opening a different conversation or listing keeps that proposal separate.
Message retention
Conversations are retained for the lifetime of your account. If an order is archived, the message thread remains accessible in your Messages inbox.
Privacy
ScentSell staff can access message threads for the purpose of dispute resolution and community safety enforcement. Messages should not contain personal contact details such as email addresses or phone numbers — sharing these to bypass the platform violates our Terms of Service.
Notification settings
You can control how you're notified about new messages:
- Push notification — immediate notification to your browser or app
- Email — summary email for each new message
