Tax and GST
ScentSell facilitates transactions between buyers and sellers but is not responsible for your individual tax obligations. This page summarises what sellers need to know about Australian tax and GST.
ABN
An Australian Business Number (ABN) is not required to sell on ScentSell as an individual (hobby seller). If you have an ABN, you can enter it during Stripe Connect onboarding and it will be displayed on your Stripe account for tax reporting purposes.
GST registration threshold
If your total taxable sales across all platforms and activities exceed $75,000 in any 12-month period, you must register for GST with the ATO. Once registered, you are required to:
- Charge GST on your sales (currently 10%)
- Lodge Business Activity Statements (BAS) quarterly or monthly
- Remit GST collected to the ATO
ScentSell does not track your sales across other platforms. Monitoring this threshold is your responsibility.

ScentSell's 15% commission and GST
ScentSell's 15% commission is an all-inclusive fee. We do not charge GST on top of our commission separately. If ScentSell is required to remit GST on our platform fees, that is handled by ScentSell — not passed through to sellers as an additional charge.
Annual earnings statements
Stripe provides an annual earnings statement through the Stripe Express dashboard. This statement shows your total earnings processed through ScentSell in a given financial year and can be used for income tax return preparation.
To access your statement:
- Go to Dashboard → Seller settings → Manage Stripe account
- Navigate to Documents or Statements in Stripe Express
TFN and withholding tax
If you did not provide your Tax File Number (TFN) during Stripe onboarding, Stripe may withhold tax from your payouts at the highest marginal rate (currently 47%). To avoid this, add your TFN in Stripe Express → Settings → Tax information.
Your obligations
Sellers are solely responsible for:
- Declaring ScentSell income in their annual tax return
- Monitoring the GST threshold
- Registering for GST if required
- Lodging BAS if GST-registered
- Maintaining records of sales (Stripe provides this)
ScentSell cannot provide tax advice. For guidance specific to your situation, consult a registered tax agent or contact the ATO on 13 28 61.
