Listing approval

Every listing on ScentSell goes through a manual admin review before it goes live. This protects buyers from fraud and keeps the marketplace quality high.

How approval works​

When you submit a listing, it enters pending review status. Our admin team reviews:

  1. Photos — Are they clear, genuine, and consistent with the description?
  2. Fill level — Does the photo support the stated fill percentage?
  3. Nozzle and crimping — Does the required nozzle-off photo clearly show the spray opening and metal crimping?
  4. Condition — Does the condition description match the photos?
  5. Pricing — Is it priced fairly for a pre-owned bottle, clearly below what it sells for new in Australia today? Listings at or near new won't be approved.
  6. Fragrance match — Is the fragrance correctly identified in our database?

The nozzle-off photo is a submission requirement, not a judgement call. If a seller cannot remove the sprayer safely, the listing stays as a private draft. Admin can help explain the requirement but cannot approve or publish it.

Reviews typically take a few hours during business hours (AEST). Listings submitted on weekends may take until the next business day.

This is a pre-owned marketplace. Price it like one.​

ScentSell is for pre-owned bottles at fair prices. That's the whole deal. Buyers check what a bottle costs new at Myer, David Jones, Chemist Warehouse, Adore Beauty, Libertine and the brand's own Australian site. What you paid doesn't matter, only what it's worth today, second-hand. Listings priced at or near new won't be approved, or kept live. No silly business, and it sells. Real bottle, real photos, real effort​

A nice photo in good light, on a plain background, is what makes a buyer trust your bottle and pick it over another. Your main photo is also what Google Shopping shows people searching for that fragrance. Better photos, more buyers, faster sale. Show the whole bottle, straight on, plus the box if you have it. Blurry, dark, cluttered, screenshot or stock photos won't be approved, or kept live. See Photo requirements.

Sealed and unopened bottles​

Photograph the cellophane intact on every side, and the batch code on the box. If you have the receipt, add it in the Receipt photo slot (cover your address and any card numbers). A sealed bottle with a receipt is the easiest sale on ScentSell. It's still a second-hand site, so price it below what it sells for new today.

If we contact you about a listing​

We may message you about a listing that's pending or already live, for example if the price is at or above new or the photos aren't good enough. It arrives by email and in your Messages. If it says you have 7 days, you have 7 days to fix it: lower the price or replace the photos from your Dashboard, or reply with a genuine reason. If it isn't fixed by then, we will remove the listing. Updating it is free, and you can relist once it's sorted.

If your listing is approved​

You'll receive a notification and your listing will appear on the marketplace as active.

If your listing is rejected​

You'll receive a notification explaining the reason for rejection. Common reasons include:

  • Unclear or insufficient photos
  • Priced near or above what the bottle sells for new in Australia
  • Fill level photo not matching the stated percentage
  • Missing or unclear nozzle-off photo
  • Suspected fake or counterfeit item
  • Incomplete or inaccurate fragrance details

You can edit the listing and resubmit after addressing the issues.

tip

The most common rejection reason is fill level photos that are unclear or taken in poor lighting. Take photos near a window with the bottle backlit to make the fill line crisp and obvious.

Can I edit a listing after it's approved?​

You can edit draft and pending listings freely. For active listings, minor edits (price changes, description updates) are allowed but significant changes (changing the fragrance, radically changing the fill %) will require re-review.
