Pricing & valuation system
ScentSell uses an automated valuation system to suggest a fair listing price. Understanding how it works helps you price competitively and sell faster.
What you'll learn
- How the ScentSell valuation formula works
- The difference between Australian and international pricing
- How condition, fill, and rarity affect the suggested price
The valuation formula
The suggested price is calculated in real time as you fill in your listing. Here's how it works:
Step 1: Base value
If the fragrance is available in Australia:
Base value = Retail price × 0.85
A 15% second-hand reduction reflects market reality for fragrances sold locally.
If the fragrance is NOT available in Australia:
Base value = Retail price + $15.00 AUD (international shipping)
No second-hand reduction applies — international-exclusive fragrances hold full retail value because buyers can't simply walk into a store and buy new.
Step 2: Fill adjustment
Adjusted value = Base value × (fill percentage / 100)
A 50% full bottle at a $200 base value becomes $100. The formula is proportional — you're essentially selling the remaining volume.
Step 3: Condition and completeness penalties
These are calculated on the original retail price (not the adjusted value):
| Factor | Penalty |
|---|---|
| Missing box | −2% of retail |
| Missing cap | −5% of retail |
| Heavily used condition | −5% of retail |
Step 4: Rarity premium
If you mark the fragrance as rare (limited edition, highly sought-after):
Rarity premium = +15% of retail price
Full formula
Final price = (Base value × fill%) − box penalty − cap penalty − condition penalty + rarity premium
Example calculation
- Fragrance: Available in Australia, retail price $220
- Fill: 75%
- Has box, has cap
- Condition: Good
- Not rare
Base value = $220 × 0.85 = $187
Adjusted = $187 × 0.75 = $140.25
No penalties
Suggested price = $140.25 AUD
Manual price override
You can always override the suggested price. Toggle "Set my own asking price" in the listing form to enter a custom amount. ScentSell will display a "price health" indicator showing whether your price is competitive.
Pricing at or below the suggested value typically attracts more interest. If you price significantly above the suggestion, expect slower sales or more negotiation.
Discontinued fragrances
For discontinued fragrances, the retail price field accepts your best estimate of the current market value. Note that discontinued status doesn't automatically add a premium — you need to also toggle "Rare" if the item commands a premium.
